This Black History Month, we continue to honor the trailblazers who helped shape our past, present, and future
📚 Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark and Dr. Kenneth Clark: Psychologists who played a key role in the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case. Their work on the psychological effects of segregation on African American children was instrumental in the decision to desegregate schools.
📚 Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum: A clinical psychologist known for her work on racial identity development in children. Her research and writings, particularly the book “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?”, have been influential in the field of psychology and education.
📚 Dr. Alvin Poussaint: A psychiatrist known for his work on racial identity and its impact on mental health. He has written extensively about the challenges faced by African American families and children.
📚 Marva Collins: A pioneering educator who developed innovative teaching methods to improve literacy and learning among inner-city students in Chicago. Collins’ approach emphasized high expectations, rigorous academics, and the development of critical thinking skills.
📚 Dr. Julie Washington: A Speech-Language Pathologist and Professor in the School of Education at the University of California – Irvine. Her work focuses on understanding the role of cultural dialect in assessment, identification of reading disabilities in school-aged African American children, and disentangling the relationship between language production and comprehension on the development of reading and early language skills for children growing up in poverty.
